Many bloggers have problems deciding on a niche to blog about. Write about what your passionate about is what you hear over and over again. However, what if your passion is something that you do not really know enough about to blog about or not something that you want to write about ongoing for at least the next few years.

I believe the number one reason many bloggers fail and yes, I’ve written blogs before, is that they choose the wrong niche or market to the wrong avatar. I believe they choose a topic and then decided ‘Nah, let’s write about something else’.

How important is a blog niche?

This is a good question as it is said you need to find a blog niche and then niche down some more.

For me, I decided that I have multiple topics that I want to talk about. I have experienced multiple things in my life and really would like to share past experiences and new experiences as Carsten and I develop additional skills and build a laptop lifestyle so that we can live like our business name a lifestyle anytime.
The business name lifestyle anytime and creating balance in all areas of life opens up a wide variety of topics. I’ve heard that having multiple not connected topics may lead to loss of interest from readers. Also, multiple topics can lead to a loss of subscribers as they await specific content. Yet, there are many blogs that write about multiple topics.

At lifestyle anytime the multiple topics are about balancing our lives. As well as choices in life, past and present, including our current journey. Building a laptop lifestyle around jobs, family, home and life in general. It’s a busy life in a busy world. Our aim is to change our ways by creating good habits that lead us to a more balanced and fulfilled life.

Blogging may be fun for some people and maybe a challenge for others. Therefore, have a think, can you think of at least 20 articles to write on your chosen topic. Twenty is a great number to start with. More ideas to write on the topic will develop as you write.

Tip 1 – Brainstorm what you could write for your niche.

One way to brainstorm is to draw a niche mind map of everything that you know, about your life and place into topics.

  • What are your hobbies?
  • How do you spend your free time?
  • What do you like to do?
  • What do you like to talk about?
  • When you were young what did you enjoy the most?
  • What do you enjoy reading?
  • What do you enjoy learning?
  • If you could do one thing the rest of your life what would do?

Blogging is a long-term strategy. Write about something that you know you will be able to write long term. You will need to write content on the subjects ongoing for years to come.

In the past, I would have panicked if told I needed to write long-term on a niche. I know this blog is my story and how I set goals for a balanced life. Naturally, my story includes my learnings and as I evolve and create the lifestyle I want. As I change my blog will evolve too and so will yours.

Tip 2 – Ask yourself questions related to your blog topic idea.

Ask yourself the questions you would search. As you answer the questions add topics to your niche mind map. The one you created in tip 1.

  • What are you passionate about? – You need to be able to talk about the subject and stay motivated.
  • Who do you want to serve?
  • Whose questions do you want to answer?
  • Whose problems do you want to solve?
  • Is the niche profitable? – Most people don’t blog for fun they blog to build an income stream online.
  • Are others making money online from this niche?

It’s important to know that money should not be the key motivator serving others should be.

I have chosen to focus on my and my family’s life as it covers a range of topics centred around family, home business, living in different countries and sharing my story. As Gary Vaynerchuk says “No Matter what you do, your job is to tell your story”

Tip 3 – Is the blog niche profitable.

In a way, this contradicts what I wrote about money not being the key motivator. Despite money not being the reason to blog, it is still awesome to earn an income from it.

Blogging needs to be fulfilling and in many cases also profitable. Yes, profitable. There are many niches that are profitable. I’m currently doing a blogging course where a person has a succulent blog that is profitable. Another person a faith blog. Someone else has a craft blog. All the niches are different, yet all the bloggers have monetized their blogs to help pay their expenses or even build their businesses.
It is money that makes the world go around and pays the bills. An important fact is to realise that, blogging profits are not going to come in immediately. It is a long-term strategy to make money blogging.

Before you ask yourself is the blog niche profitable? Think of ways you will enjoy providing value to others.
Examples of things to help make money blogging include;

  • Digital goods – for example, pictures. canva is just one of many platforms that sell photos.
  • Services – marketing, copywriting, website building.
  • Physical good – clothes, electronics.
  • Education – coaching, courses, books, webinars.

Blogging is a side business for many and the aim of many bloggers is to share information in articles, in coaching calls, in webinars that touch others so that their life is changed and inspire them to live their dreams.

A final tip before you commence blogging is research and follow other bloggers who are in your niche.

As mentioned above, the most important factor in deciding your blog niche is choosing something you know you will like to write about for a long time.
